Covering an ultra-marathon across the Devon countryside, from first light to the final checkpoints.
As a Somerset-based video production company, we're used to filming running events, but the East Devon Round was on a different scale. The ultra-marathon takes runners over coastal trails, quiet lanes and steep countryside climbs, so covering it meant careful planning, long hours and a lot of time on the road.
The goal was twofold:
Cover the whole course – Runners were spread across checkpoints over a large area, and we needed to capture the race as it unfolded.
Tell the runners’ story – Ultra-marathons are as much about mental endurance as physical strength, so we wanted to capture the determination, exhaustion and achievement along the way.
Gareth and Rich were on the road before sunrise with the truck loaded with production gear. With so much ground to cover, timing and logistics mattered as much as the filming. We planned our route between checkpoints so we could keep up with the race and still be in the right place for the key moments.
Handheld cameras for close-up action and interviews. GoPros for immersive shots from the runners’ point of view. Drone footage to show the scale of the course and the Devon landscape from above. A behind-the-scenes vlog filmed by Rich throughout the day, from the early setup to travelling between locations.
Post-production: Deliverables was a short round up video of the whole event and social media cutdowns for future use.
Coverage from checkpoint to checkpoint, with every location bringing a different backdrop. A mix of cinematic drone shots and handheld footage showing both the scale of the event and each runner’s personal journey. A behind-the-scenes vlog showing what goes into covering an event of this size.
On a large event, planning the route matters as much as the filming. Mixing drone, handheld and GoPro footage tells the story from every angle. The most memorable shots are often of the runners themselves, not just the scenery.
At GD Media, events like the East Devon Round are exactly the kind of challenge we enjoy. Thanks to everyone involved for having us along. If you’re organising an event and want it captured properly, we’d love to hear from you.

Brand film, social content, an event, a drone shot you can’t get any other way — give us the brief and we’ll tell you straight how we’d shoot it and what it costs. We’re a small, experienced crew, not the cheapest option in the county, and the work shows it.
